Excited to See "Flipped"

My sister recently informed me that they're making a movie version of "Flipped" by Wendelin Van Draanen (you can read the plot here). I'm not sure if it's a popular book, but I had the chance to borrow it (several times) from the Brent Library and loved it. I suppose it falls under the Young Adult category, but you know me, I love books for young people, hence my continuously growing collection of Newbery winners. Another writer I discovered from said library is Sharon Creech. Love her books too. I'm sure there are others authors and I'll probably recall them as I write this post, but for now, Sharon Creech is all I can remember. You see, my first year teaching at Brent, Mark hadn't joined me yet (we were married in December and he didn't join me up there until April or May) and most Fridays, I would take the bus and travel 3+hours from Subic to Manila. On the bus, I had a choice of watching Steven Seagal movies (or worse, Bong Revilla/Robin Padilla), sleeping (not if I could help it), or reading. Naturally, reading won and every Friday, I would borrow three to five titles from the school library just for the bus ride.

Back to Flipped, Madeline Carroll plays the female protagonist, Juli, (love her - she's my kind of girl). They seem to have made a great choice. I've seen her in some shows, but I think the last one was NCIS where she played a teen genius in a program helping the US Army. From what I've seen of the trailer, the movie seems to be set in an earlier decade ('50s or '60s), but I don't remember getting that impression from the book. I don't think it matters. Anyway, I hope it's a cute movie. I seem to have a double standard when it comes to movie adaptation of books. I get enthusiastic over kiddie ones and dread grown-up ones (the Bourne series completely turned me off - Matt Damon is so not my idea of Jason Bourne). I know I've expressed my juvenile excitement over getting to watch "Bridge to Terabithia" (this one is the opposite - novel was set in the '70s, I think, but movie was set in the 2000s - love the author Katherine Paterson - the Brent Library would also have records of my numerous loans of "Jacob Have I Loved"), Kit Kittredge (love that young actress Abigail Breslin - hope she grows up okay)... I just love this type of films. The other day, Matilda (Roald Dahl) was on HBO and Mom, Chip, Marguerite, Cheska, and I watched it again. And, yes, we also watch the movie version of the "Babysitters Club" every time HBO airs it.

I hope they do show it in theaters. Last year, I was so excited about the movie adaptation of Jerry Spinelli's "Stargirl" and that movie never came to be.
