Mark's Birthday

It's my husband's birthday today. He's giving himself a gadgety present, so I didn't get him one anymore (I'd probably have given him socks and underwear anyway, lol). I did bake him a cake, which turned out like this:

There are more YouTube videos to watch and eHow articles to read before I can successfully make a birthday cake, lol. That's not what I had planned on. It was supposed to be a fondant, but the fondant recipe I followed was no good for my purpose, albeit its good reviews, so I ended up doing the usual buttercream frosting. Those blue pebbles and stripes were from the failed fondant (I think I'm just making dessert mints with it). Anyhoo, the cake turned out much better than my first two attempts, definitely spongier.
This morning, I brought the cake into our room when Mark woke up. He looks like he's sleeping in the picture, but he's actually blowing out the candle. Of course, little girls usually feel compelled to usurp the birthday celebrator's candle blowing rights and Marguerite is no different.

And then, Mark got exasperated with my insistence on taking pictures with my old phone and made me haul out the big camera from its storage box (the hassle!). So here are pics from a better camera (Mark took the one of the entire cake; I took that of the M).

Last night, Marguerite and I also worked on a video for her dad. This is now on Mark's Facebook page.

Happy birthday Mark! I think the cake and the surprise, is a better gift than any gadget :) Were the letters pieces of cake too?

@Dave: Thanks! It's not bad for a first attempt at a birthday cake. :)

@Joi: Thanks. We miss you guys too. :)

@Vera: Thanks. If anything, they were certainly more personal. And yes, the letters were also pieces of cake. :)
